William Workman, 54, of Reno, Nev., has a long history of felony convictions, including:
- molesting a 7-year-old girl after her babysitter fell asleep
- failure to register as a sex offender
- slashing a man's throat
- drunk driving
- burglary
- robbery
In fact, he has spent 12 of the last 19 years in prison. The threat of going back wasn't enough to keep Workman straight: he was just convicted of his eighth felony, a burglary. Workman insisted he was innocent of burglary: he only went inside to get warm, since he's homeless, he told the court. The excuse didn't wash with jurors; he was convicted of burglary after they found he had rummaged through the place -- and had the key to his girlfriend's motel room in his pocket.
With that, society -- or, at least, the state of Nevada -- has officially given up on Workman: on March 24, Washoe District Judge Robert Perry declared him a "habitual criminal" and sentenced him to life in prison.
Of course, in the U.S. "life" doesn't really mean life: he must serve a minimum of 10 years before being considered eligible for parole.

So, he's been in prison most of the last 19 years, and we're only "giving up" on him for another 10. Got it.

I have credit for delivering the only baby born at San Quentin! (Mom was there to visit dad. What a way to start a life! Maybe one day I'll hear from the kid.) -rc
When the kid's old enough to be in a bar, and the typical pickup scene...
"So, what sign were you born under?"
"I think it was 'Bend Over for Body Cavity Search'."
The kid is definitely old enough to legally go to a bar now. It's hell getting old! -rc

Why does this article make me think of seeing a prison at Point Barrows, Alaska or any of the Siberian Gulags -- especially Vorkuta on the Arctic Circle?
