bullet  Poetic Justice

Usually, these stories are about the weird things people do to get arrested. In this case, the story is also about the arresting officer.

It was in Naples, Fla., and the arresting officer was Lee County Sheriff's Deputy 1st Class Jeff Pierot.

A different deputy had pulled over Troy M. Reuter, 40, Saturday night for weaving, and gave him a citation for failure to maintain his lane. Pierot, however, had another charge in mind.

As Pierot approached Reuter's car, "within six feet I could smell alcoholic beverage coming from the area of the car," he wrote in his report. "Reuter's eyes were not just watery and bloodshot, but looked like two meteorites on fire."

After ordering Reuter out of his car, Dep. Pierot continued, "Reuter swayed like a hula dancer on a tossing ship in a heavy sea until he made it over to the spot about 20 feet away."

Reuter couldn't remember his address, but said that "it is just around the corner."

Pierot commented on the footwear Reuter was wearing. "Reuter advised that he was wearing his own 'shoes' (white fluffy slippers?) and that he felt more comfortable doing the exercises in them," Pierot wrote. He told Reuter he "could take off his white fluffy slippers if he wished."

Not surprisingly, white fuzzy slippers or not, Reuter failed Pierot's field sobriety tests, and "At 22:43 [hours], based on my 23 (plus) years of law enforcement experience and advanced DUI training, I placed Reuter under arrest for DUI. Reuter stumbled and his legs were like rubber bands and I had to half carry him to my car."

A breathalyzer test at the jail measured Reuter's blood alcohol content at 0.230 and 0.236 percent -- nearly three times the legal limit. He was booked on a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and held on $1,500 bond.

Dep. Pierot, your badge glistens in the moonlight like the bright eyes of the women fluttering their lashes at you as you cart felonious Floridians off to jail. But we fear dastardly district attorneys will pooh pooh your purple prose.

No, Mike. "The night was sultry."

If Florida is like it is here (the St. Louis, MO metro area) any time a cop pulls someone over at night they have a second one as backup. Too many cases of police being shot at by the obliviates who think they can get away with it.

Btw, I enjoyed his prose. I imagine police reports can get rather mundane very quickly.

@Jim in SW Illinois: St. Louis County cops are relatively cool compared to their city counterparts. I've received more crap from St. Louis City cops than from any other department as an adult.
