At 4:30 a.m. on March 28, an irate customer in the drive-through lane at a McDonald's restaurant in South Brunswick, N.J., climbed through the window, allegedly threatened and then slapped an employee, and grabbed a Filet-o-Fish sandwich before leaving through the door.
The angry man was apparently upset that the line was moving too slowly. He told the employee he would be "waiting for him," police say. He had apparently already paid for his sandwich.
Police released security camera footage of the incident in hopes someone would recognize the man. (See video, below.)
"Someone" didn't, police say -- a lot of people recognized Rashon East, 34, of New Brunswick, and urged him to turn himself him in. Including his own children.
"The news also generated several tipsters who identified East late last week," said Sgt. James Ryan. "Indications are that East's family, including his own children, saw his images and encouraged him to give up."
East turned himself in April 5, accompanied by friends. He was charged with assault and making terroristic threats, then released. If convicted of those charges, he faces up to 5 years in prison.
But some criticized the use of the video in apprehending East.
"We lived in a surveilled nation," complained Brock Meek, director of communications for the Washington D.C.-based Center for Democracy and Technology. "Police know this. They are taking advantage of this phenomena to stand it on its head for law enforcement benefits."
Wait: he's criticizing that security camera footage of a crime committed on private property was used to catch the perpetrator of that crime?! Yeah, good luck with that protest, Mr. Meek. Don't count on inheriting the earth.
Ohhhhhhhhh MAN!!! This, once again, brings me back to the eternal question: WHAT is WRONG with people??
Mr. Meek: Yeah, um, SECURITY camera pretty much says it all...
In regards to Martin's concern over 'racial' heading on the video: I noticed it immediately, and KNEW someone would have an issue with it. Isn't it about time we stop LOOKING for racism in everything? Sheesh. GET OVER IT! Let it GO already....let's RISE ABOVE. OVERCOME!
If you are looking for something to be offended about, you will always ALWAYS find it. Whether or not it is a VALID reason for offense is a whole other issue.

To all those who focus on 'racial slurs' just thought I'd say angry 'black' guy just seems to differentiate from all the 'white' guys who USUALLY do this! (Or so it seems to read to me coming from a place that hardly sees Afro-Americans)

I think the best defense for this action would be based in nutritional medicine. To wit, fish is well known as a brain food, and the defendent's body, due to a prolonged lack of any nutrition for its brain, and the resultant atrophy of its brain, made the lunge toward the brain food, fought for the brain food, and devoured the brain food, because of overwhelming autonomic central nervous system processes.
