Two patrons asked the doorman at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Ill., if he could break a $100 bill on April 11. He gave them change, and they went in -- but when the doorman looked at the bill, it looked so fake that he called hotel security, who agreed and summoned police.

Officers arrived just before the two men came back out. Officers frisked the men, and found a loaded .40 caliber handgun.

When they looked in the man's suitcase, they found $54,350 in fake $50 and $100 bills -- plus two more guns and a date-rape drug. The two, Jeffrey Mundt and Joseph Banis, were arrested.

Mundt, who is formerly an IT manager at Northwestern University, was charged with misdemeanor theft (for allegedly passing the counterfeit bill) and felony possession of a false state identification, and was held on $50,000 bail.

Banis, who police noted had tribal tattoos, a blue Mohawk, and blue nail polish, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a false identification, theft, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to have a Firearms Owner Identification card, and was held on $200,000 bail.

The fake cash was turned over to the U.S. Secret Service, and federal charges are pending.

There's no way he had a gun... guns are illegal in Chicago. (At least, until SCOTUS rules on McDonald.)

They could have bought the gun on the black market, from a private party, or picked it up from an area where gun laws are looser than in Chicago.

(I think Lynne was pointing out the futility of the city's gun laws: they don't do a lot to stop criminals from criminal firearm possession. -rc)

As many people have said when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. I believe that if Chicago has a law that prohibits gun ownership then it has violated the bill of rights and the law becomes invalid.
