74-year-old Joy Cassidy had a bone to pick with the Ada Community Library in Boise, Idaho.

On at least 10 occasions since May of 2009, police allege that she vandalized the book drop at the library with various liquids, including ketchup and corn syrup, and has caused about $1,000 in damage to books.

Boise Police staked out the book drop on June 13, and saw a car that matched the description of the vehicle reported to be in the area around the time each incident occurred, according to a police spokesman.

The pulled the car over and spoke to Cassidy, who, they determined, had just dropped an open jar of mayonnaise in the library drop box. They took her into custody on a misdemeanor charge of injury to property and, upon searching her vehicle, found a loaded handgun under the driver's seat. She didn't have a concealed weapons permit, and was additionally charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

A motive for the vandalism has yet to be determined.

@Robert: Far too true. It includes our state legislature. They cut the state library budget by 40% this past summer. I guess they don't need public libraries, so no one else should.

First, let me say I am an avid reader, I own many books and read parts of multiple books daily and much on the internet.

That being said, I have long (13 years) been a proponent of scaling back libraries in a serious way. I see them as money sinks that do not facilitate the public good but rather a very few people.

Before the internet I was a proponent of library services in a big way.

But having raised a daughter who is now 23, dated a Librarian thus getting a good bit of detail, I have concluded our public resources could be far better served in other ways.

If libraries were actively driving AWAY from books and to more online content I would be more disposed to the continuation of libraries whereby they become simply means of accessing electronic documents.
