bullet  Butt Dialer

Two teenagers allegedly burgling a car in Daytona Beach, Florida, were caught when one of them accidentally "butt dialed" (as one news station put it) 911 during the break in.

Stefanie Vargas, 19, and a 13-year old boy were nabbed with allegedly stolen items still in their hands. Police say Vargas and the boy accidentally called 911 while inside the vehicle, and were recorded discussing what was worth taking and what to leave.

At the beginning of the call, the 911 dispatcher reported hearing someone talking about karma. The call continues, "When I beep the horn it means the cops are on their way, you hear me? You promise you hear me?"

"Look in here, in the glove compartment. They have, like, GPSs or something." "Oh, I didn't even think about that." "That's where the GPSs are at," the conversation went.

"You got to break the SIM card. Take that SIM card out. They can trace it," the more experienced burglar said. Then, the clincher: "Trust me, God always works in mysterious ways. If you be greedy, that's when you get caught up, alright?"

The two are reported to have had no idea they had placed the call, and that officers had been alerted.

Vargas and the boy were arrested on February 21st on one count each of burglary of a conveyance. Vargas was held on $5,000 bond, and the 13-year old was released to a parent. We assume he is currently grounded.

I know most thieves aren't very smart, but this proves I had too high of an opinion of most thieves. Hope that the 13 yr old learned a lesson, but back to the intelligence issue -- I doubt it.

To Lenny in Hialeah Fla.: I've got relatives down there. Maybe I should start sending them stories of Fla. criminals from this list. Believe it or not, I actually considered moving down to Miami until Florida started getting hit with all the storms.
